How should an acquired portfolio govern inconsistent operating definitions?
Direct answer
Do not force every community onto one system first. Preserve each source’s definition as evidence, surface where definitions materially differ, and have the authorized operator decide which definition governs for each purpose — then apply that ruling consistently and record it. Govern first. Replace only by choice.
Separate the four kinds of problem
Not every inconsistency after an acquisition is a governance problem. Sort them before acting.
- 01Real disagreement — two legitimate sources answer the same purpose differently: govern it.
- 02One-time policy — a definition must be chosen once and applied: define and configure it.
- 03Sync or workflow lag — one system has not yet received newer information: surface and route it.
- 04Disconnected information — complementary data never joined: connect it.
Why heterogeneity raises the stakes
The more heterogeneous the operating environment, the more valuable explicit governed context can become. Inherited stacks and multiple ownership relationships multiply the readings leadership must reconcile; a recorded governing determination stops the same argument recurring each month.
