I Was Going to Quit on Tuesday
A certified nursing assistant on the morning someone finally noticed.
The Monday before
That Monday — the day before — Linda called me into her office. Linda is our administrator. I respect her, but she’d never called me in for anything that wasn’t a write-up or a schedule change. So, I went in with my shoulders up.
She had a screen open and she didn’t turn it around. She just said, “Maria, you haven’t taken a meal break in three weeks. What’s going on.”
I gave her the answer I gave everyone. I’m fine. It’s been a stretch. I’m fine.
What we tried
We tried to fix three things. The schedule rebuilds took two tries. The first version still had me as the default for Saturday callouts because that’s how it had always been, and nobody noticed for almost a month. We fixed it again. The buddy CNA on Saturdays worked from week one. Linda put a standing ten-minute coffee on her calendar with me, every other Friday, no agenda. We’ve missed two of them. We’ve kept the rest.
I’m still here. Mrs. Albright passed in February. I sat with her family. I went home and slept for ten hours and came back the next day. That’s the job. That’s always been the job.
I’m not telling you a piece of software saved my career. Linda saved my career. But there are eighty-four of us on her staff, and Linda is one person, and before that Monday she had no idea I was in trouble. Something told her to ask. That’s all I know.
